Mohammad Kamal HOSSAIN is working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at Comilla University (CoU). On Dec 05, 2011 he first joined the department of Physics at CoU as a lecturer. Prior joining to CoU, Hossain worked as a lecturer in the Department of Natural Sciences at Stamford University Bangladesh. He received his BSc and MS in Physics from the Department of Physics, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh.
Hossain won the Scholarship, “Postgraduate Studentship” in September 2016 from the City University of Hong Kong (QS World University Ranking, 2024 # 62) for pursuing his PhD study, and joined the group of Professor Kin Man YU (K M YU). Prof. YU is one of the prominent figures in semiconducting materials research. From 1987-2014, he was Staff Scientist and Principal Investigator in the Materials Sciences Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), California, USA. At LBNL he was also the Director of the Ion Beam Analysis Facility (IBAF). Since August 2014, he has been serving as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Physics (JAP) published by the American Institute of Physics (AIP). Dr. YU joined the City University of Hong Kong as a Professor in the Department of Physics and Materials Science in October 2014. Under the supervision of Prof. YU, Hossain conducted research on Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) synthesis and characterization of Nano-/Micro Structured All-Inorganic Metal Halide Perovskites (IHPs) materials and earned his PhD in Physics on 15 July 2021.
Hossain received conference grants (funded by University Grants Committee, HK; the City University of Hong Kong, and Professor’s Projects) and joined several national-international premier semiconducting materials conferences including Compound Semiconductor Week (CSW), Electronic Materials Conference (EMC), IONS KOALA: International OSA (Optical Society of America) Networks of Students conference, and ICOMEA (International Conference on Materials for Energy Applications). To broaden his horizon in the academia, he visited several internationally famous universities and laboratories including University of Oxford, UK; University of California, Berkeley, USA; University of Birmingham, UK; University of California, Santabarbara, USA; University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand; Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand; National University of Singapore, Singapore; Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR; The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong SAR; and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), California, USA.
He is a recipient of several prestigious awards and scholarships for conducting research nationally and internationally. Among them the Vice Chancellor Award for Outstanding Research in Special Category, Comilla University (2023); Outstanding Academic Performance Award, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR (2018–19); Research Tuition Scholarship (for excellent research and course work performances), City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR (2018–19); Postgraduate Studentship for PhD study, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong (2016–19) are some to mention.
After being awarded the doctoral degree, Hossain returned to his home institute, Comilla University, Bangladesh. At present he is working on semiconducting nanomaterials. As part of his research initiatives, Hossain has already supervised two MSc thesis and five MSc project students. Currently he is supervising two MSc thesis and three MSc Project students. With an aim to learn from his peers and to share his knowledge in nano field, he intends to set up a laboratory based semiconducting nanomaterials study (growth, characterizations, and devising) facility at CoU funded by a UGC project.
Hossain has authored and co-authored a number of scientific articles in many reputed journals published by the American Institute of Physics (AIP), American Chemical Society (ACS), Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Wiley & Sons, Springer-Nature, and Elsevier, etc. At present, in additon to his collaboration with a number of prominent resarch groups of some reputed universities of the country, he is also in collaboration with 4 different international research groups of the University of Central Florida, Orlando, USA; Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, USA; Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, Wroclaw, Poland; and National Sun Yat Sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
