Dr. Md. Shamimul Islam is a young and promising Professor of Economics at Comilla University, Bangladesh. Since joining the Department of Economics in 2007, he steadily advanced through academic ranks—starting as Lecturer (2007), then Assistant Professor (2011), Associate Professor (2017), and attaining full Professorship in June 2021.
He earned his foundational education at Islamic University, Kushtia, completing his BSS (Hons.) in Economics in 2003 and MSS in 2004—both in first class, topping his class. His doctoral degree (PhD) in Economics was awarded by Islamic University in 2017.
Dr. Islam's teaching repertoire spans Microeconomics, Advanced Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Economics, Environmental Economics, Research Methodology. Earlier, he served as Coordinator of Economics department of Asian University of Bangladesh. At Comilla University he served as an assistant proctor, and as a House Tutor at Nawab Fayjunessa Chowdhurany Hall. Notably he served as the Dean of faculty of Law, Comilla University. He is also an active BNCC officer of the University.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Islam’s interests include Environmental Economics, Climate Change, International Economics, and Education Economics. He has over 22 peer-reviewed publications encompassing topics like remittances and inflation, foreign direct investment, migration, livelihood adaptation, and teacher savings behavior.
In departmental leadership, he serves as Head of the Department of Economics and member of the Academic Council. He is a life member of the Bangladesh Economic Association and Bangladesh Economic Teachers Association.
Dr. Islam’s academic profile reflects dedication to teaching excellence, impactful research in socioeconomic and environmental fields, and active engagement in institutional development. His work continues to influence both the academic community and policy discourse in Bangladesh.
