Dr. Kawchar Patwary joined the Department of Physics in December 2014 as a Lecturer and has been serving as an Associate Professor since June 2021. He is an experimental nuclear physicist whose research spans nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, particle physics, and radiation & health physics. He actively collaborates with multidisciplinary research groups both nationally and internationally.
Most recently, Dr. Patwary was a Postdoctoral Visiting Researcher at the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), Trieste, Italy, where he contributed to the FAMU (Fisica degli Atomi MUonici) experiment. His work focused on the experimental data analysis for the precision measurement of the proton Zemach radius through hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen, a study with profound implications for quantum electrodynamics (QED) and the understanding of proton structure.
From 2022 to 2024, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), based at the ANNRI beamline of J-PARC’s Materials and Life Science Facility. There, he specialized in neutron capture cross-section measurements of enriched isotopes using high-flux neutron beams. His research contributed to nuclear data relevant to s-process nucleosynthesis in astrophysics, as well as applications in nuclear technology, neutron imaging, and non-destructive testing. He gained expertise in advanced detector systems, including NaI(Tl), LaBr₃(Ce), and HPGe detectors, and in analysis tools such as ROOT, PHITS, Geant4, and R-matrix methods.
Dr. Patwary earned his Ph.D. in Experimental Nuclear Physics from Kyushu University, Japan. His doctoral work involved neutron and charged-particle-induced reactions on light elements, particularly for developing accelerator-based neutron sources for medical radioisotope production and nuclear security.
At Comilla University, Dr. Patwary teaches courses in Nuclear Physics, Reactor Physics, Medical Physics, and Radiation & Health Physics, while also supervising the research and theses of M.Sc. students. His research continues to focus on nuclear data measurements, detector development, and applied nuclear physics with relevance to medicine, energy, and security.
He is a fellow of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Italy, and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy. He has been awarded several prestigious scholarships and fellowships, including the JAEA Postdoctoral Fellowship, Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship, and TWAS-SISSA-Lincei Research Cooperation Award.
Dr. Patwary is a life member of the Bangladesh Physical Society (BPS) and the Bangladesh Medical Physics Association (BMPA). He is also a regular member of the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) and the Society for Dose Optimization in Targeted Radioisotope Therapy (TRT dose), Japan.
